Tourism for Sustainable Development
|
|
|
Nepal is one of the world's leading trekking
destinations, attracting more than 400,000
foreign tourists each year. However, very
few rural people benefit from this business.
Uncontrolled tourism has damaged the
environment and induced unwanted social
change along Nepal's most popular trekking
routes.
Community Tourism is
different. It is an income-generating
activity, operated by rural communities, and
is an integral part of multifaceted
approach to the alleviation of poverty.
CCODER's innovative tourism program
enhances inter-cultural relationships while
offering economic development to the
disadvantaged in remote village areas.
Community Tourism is interlinked with all
other components of CCODER's village
development model. The banks, the schools
and the families are all part of this unique
trekking alternative!
Community Tourism : Sharing the Benefits
With the Communities
The Community Tourism Program, which
started in 1998, links community development
and sustainable tourism by creating
employment and local marketing possibilities
for local products,
thus generating income for villagers. Women
are major beneficiaries, as tourism creates
many new job opportunities for them.
Wherever possible, we employ local
staff, buy local products, and offer
village 'home stay' accommodation – not only
to give you, the tourist, a very unique
holiday experience, but also to maximize the
benefits from tourism for the host
communities!
Community Tourism is a rural enterprise
owned and operated by the local people. It
is a group activity, and benefits are shared
among as many villages and individuals as
possible. CCODER assists the communities in
the development of tourism products,
training, infrastructure improvements,
networking and marketing and promotion.
Community Tourism provides incentives for
reforestation and nature conservation.
Village home-stays also encourage
intercultural exchange, mutual
understanding, and learning, all of which
foster the sense of a 'global family.'
Our Effort:
We work for and with rural people and help them
to develop their resources and skills.
Up to now, our activities have included the
selection and development of model tourism villages,
development of trekking routes, preparation
of guestrooms, numbering of houses,
infrastructure improvements (drinking water,
trail improvement etc.), trainings (tourism
awareness, hygienic food preparation,
hospitality management, community-based
planning) promotion, marketing and
linking tourists to the communities.
CCODER is not a trekking agency. For
your maximum comfort and safety, we
trek you through our partner
trekking agency,
who makes all travel
arrangement under our
guidance.
